Jerez de la Frontera
Jerez de la Frontera, where I am staying is located in the south of Spain. It is in the province of Cadiz and is the largest town in this province, although it is still quite a bit smaller than Portland. The south of Spain is right next to Africa, and a long time ago, large parts of the south of Spain were occupied by Arabs for many years. Because of this, many cities in the south are set up like old Arab cities, with a Plaza in the middle and the streets radiating off the plaza. Jerez has many plazas, but there is one central district which all of the neighborhoods lead to.
I took a walk this morning through the center of town and got completely lost, as the streets are very confusing and do not go in straight lines. The other tricky thing about Jerez is that there are very little street signs, so even with my map, it was hard to tell exactly where I was. I think it is a lot easier to go by landmarks rather than by streets!
