To begin with, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the world championship of motorcycle racing was being held in Jerez, about ten minutes away from the flat (USA took 4th place). The entire town filled up with motorcycles and the constant revving of engines filled the town. As I said in earlier posts, Spain does not do things early, so these motorcycle noises went on at all hours of the night. I actually hated it, because there seemed to be a never ending competition going on between the people who were riding around town, not even in any real competition.
Sunday was the first night of the Feria, which is taking place in a park right below my window. I went on Sunday night to see all the lights and fireworks and again this evening with my family. The girls all dressed in their flamenco style dresses and looked very cute indeed!
The fair will continue on throughout this week and my host mother has warned me that every night it gets louder and louder. I don't mind the noise of the people, and I am so thankful the motorcycles are all gone.
The fair consists of rows and rows of "casetas" which are little booth like houses one can enter. Each caseta is owned by different businesses in town. You can sit here and eat a little something or drink a beer or some famous Jerez sherry. Past the casetas, it is set up like a regular fair, rides and stands selling different fried foods, nuts, candy and fat slices of coconut. Surrounding it all are more booths selling junk food and many vendors selling trinkets and clothes and art, it almost looks like the Portland Saturday Market.
I have always enjoyed going to the fair in Sacramento, and this one is ten fold better. It is a little bit a pain that we live so close, but on the other hand, we can just walk over there and don't have to deal with parking (which is impossible). There is no charge to come in to the fair and the rides are very cheap. There is also a lot more of a variety of rides. I don't want to bash the good ol Cal State Fair, I'm just saying, step it up Cali!!
